Saratoga National Historical Park and the Saratoga County 250th Commission are co-hosting a community reading of the Declaration of Independence.
Following the signing of the Declaration, the news traveled north to New York. Historical documents show that the Declaration was published and read publicly in Albany County (which at that time included Saratoga County) on July 19, 1776, as directed by the Albany Committee of Correspondence.
Carmen Ross, Board Member of the Saratoga County League of Women Voters, will represent the League as one of the community readers of the Declaration of Independence. The event will include presentations about the Declaration, its signing, and how word traveled throughout the colonies and New York State, and will feature a short musical performance followed by the community reading. 20-30 readers will participate in the reading. Each reader will be given a few lines to read aloud.
League members are encouraged to attend wearing something that identifies you as a member of the League. Our membership team will be there with membership and voting information.
