We will be joined by Famous Person Martha Griffiths (D-MI) - a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1955-1974. She was the first woman to serve on the powerful House Committee on Ways and Means, was instrumental in adding the prohibition of sex discrimination to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and in 1970 she forced the ERA out of committee (where it had languished every year since 1923) by filing a discharge petition.
In 1972 she re-introduced the ERA which passed in Congress but has never been ratified by the required number of states. She was a lifelong advocate for women’s rights.
Rep. Griffiths will be presented by Kim Harvish, a women’s history presenter and re-enactor since 2011.
